If you're familiar with Mo Willems from Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! or the much-loved Elephant and Piggie series, get ready to see this celebrated author and illustrator in a whole new way. I recently had the chance to visit Opposites Abstract: A Mo Willems Exhibit at the Taubman Museum of Art, and this exhibit is unlike anything you'd expect from the creator of those beloved books.
While we don’t have Opposites Abstract in our book collection yet, I can confidently say it’s now at the top of my list. This exhibit offers a completely different side of Willems' work—a sophisticated yet accessible take on opposites that we all understand, but with a visually stunning twist. It’s an experience that connects to families of all ages in a way that’s fun, engaging, and thought-provoking.
The Exhibit: 20 Large-Scale Abstract Paintings Meet Interactive Innovation
Created in partnership with the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and The Mo Willems Studio, this exhibit showcases 20 bold, large-scale abstract paintings that Mo Willems created in 2020. These aren’t the familiar whimsical illustrations we know him for. Instead, Willems explores opposites like loud/quiet, soft/hard, and light/dark using striking abstract forms and rich, vibrant colors. The paintings themselves are housed upstairs, and they're absolutely breathtaking.
These works go beyond what you'd expect from a children's book illustrator. There's an intensity and depth to them that shows Willems' versatility as an artist, making this exhibit not just for kids, but for anyone who appreciates thoughtful and dynamic art.
Six Interactive Stations That Actually Deliver
What sets this exhibit apart from other museum experiences is the hands-on approach. The six interactive stations on the main level aren’t just afterthoughts—they’ve been thoughtfully designed to complement the abstract paintings upstairs and truly enhance the experience.
- Ball Launcher: This was by far our favorite station. My 14-year-old and I spent way too much time trying to hit the secret compartment! It’s part game, part physics experiment, and a perfect challenge for kids and adults alike.
- Word Abstracter: Turn everyday words into colorful abstract art. It was so fun seeing how simple words could transform into something visually unique.
- Sound Slower: Play melodies and manipulate their speed with the turn of a crank. The kids couldn’t stop giggling at the changes, and it’s a perfect mix of silly and educational.
- Shape Stacker: A great one for builders and designers! This station lets you explore form, balance, and structure while creating something new.
- Drawing Machine: Here’s where things get really fun. You and a partner draw on different screens, and your curves turn into straight lines on the other person’s screen (and vice versa). It’s quirky, collaborative, and an unexpected way to create art.
- Color Reverser: This one was particularly delightful because it includes props featuring Mo Willems’ beloved characters like Elephant, Piggie, and the Pigeon! You can experiment with color opposites and watch your creations transform in real-time.
Each of these stations is intuitive, fun, and designed to engage kids of all ages. I was honestly impressed with how absorbed my kids were for over an hour—each station is so well thought-out that they never got bored.
Don't Miss the Opening Celebration
If you can, you definitely want to check out the Opposites Abstract Opening Partythis Saturday, June 7th from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The museum is calling it a "colorful celebration of creativity, imagination, and fun," and the activities lined up certainly deliver on that promise:
- Live Music: Enjoy tunes from Einstein’s Monkey, a family-friendly indie-rock band
- Refreshments: Savor cake from Evie’s Bistro and Bakery
- Story Time: Attend storytime sessions with Roanoke City Libraries, featuring Mo Willems' books, of course!
- Community Art Project: Paint a Mo Willems-inspired Healing Ceiling Tile, which will be donated to a Carilion Clinic patient care area
- Special Access: Full access to all interactive stations and Art Venture
