Looking for a free, family-friendly way to enjoy the summer and get your kids outside and moving? The first-ever Commonwealth Day of Play is coming to Roanoke, and it’s the perfect chance for families to unplug and play together. Hosted by the Greater Williamson Road Area Business Association in partnership with the Governor’s Office, this exciting new event will take place on Saturday, August 9, from noon to 4 p.m. at Brookside Par 3 Golf Course—and admission is completely free!
What is the Commonwealth Day of Play?
This special day is part of Virginia’s “Reclaiming Childhood” initiative, which encourages kids and families to reconnect through physical activity, play, and community engagement. Organizers hope to remind everyone—from toddlers to teens (and parents too!)—that putting down devices and spending time together outside can be both fun and rewarding.
What to Expect at the Event
Families can look forward to an afternoon packed with games, activities, food, and giveaways. There’s something for everyone, from energetic little ones to teens and grown-ups:
- Free golf for all ages (no experience needed—clubs and balls are provided!)
- Classic games like tug-of-war, cornhole, and sack races
- Prizes, raffles, and giveaways throughout the event
- Hot dogs, hamburgers, snacks, and beverages to enjoy
- The first 20 kids to arrive will receive a free sleeve of golf balls
- Kids play free on a return visit when a parent purchases a golf pass
“The Commonwealth Day of Play is really about families spending meaningful time together,” said Valerie Brown, Executive Director of the Greater Williamson Road Area Business Association. “We want to give families a chance to enjoy simple, joyful moments that create strong community bonds and lifelong memories.”
Unplug and Reconnect
Whether your family enjoys being active or simply relaxing in the sun, this event offers a rare opportunity to take a break from screens and enjoy some real-world fun. Brookside Par 3 Golf Course owner Milt Crandall shared, “Technology is great, but it’s also important to encourage time without screens. We hope families will come out, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy connecting with each other and the community.”
Organizations like The First Tee of Roanoke, the Roanoke City Police Department, Valley Wealth Group, 5Points Creative, and others are also teaming up to support the fun.
