Families looking for a fun way to keep kids reading this winter — and reward them with a special community experience — will want to check out Roanoke County Public Libraries’ Winter Reading Challenge.
The annual program runs from January 5 through February 14 and is open to children up to age 11. This year’s challenge comes with a unique incentive: every child who completes the program will earn a free children’s ticket to see the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs play on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
Library officials say the goal of the program is to encourage reading for enjoyment while giving families something exciting to look forward to once winter winds down.
The reading requirements vary by age group. Children up to age 5 complete the challenge by reading 20 books, while children ages 6–11 complete the challenge by reading five books. All book formats and lengths count, making it easy for families to participate using picture books, chapter books, audiobooks, or graphic novels.
Each child who finishes the challenge will receive a small prize along with one complimentary ticket to the March 7 Rail Yard Dawgs game. Tickets are valid in select seating sections and must be redeemed using a QR code provided after completion. Tickets cannot be redeemed through the box office or the team’s website.
Families may also use the same QR code to purchase additional discounted tickets for parents or guests. Parking will be available for purchase, and a free shuttle will run from the Elmwood Park Garage in downtown Roanoke for families who prefer not to drive.
In addition to the hockey tickets, each participating Roanoke County library branch will award special branch prizes following the conclusion of the challenge. One child in each age group will be selected through a drawing at each branch.
For children ages 0–5, the branch prize includes a board book version of The Mitten by Jan Brett along with a matching flannel story set. For children ages 6–11, the prize includes the board game Don’t Break the Ice and a penguin plush.
The Winter Reading Challenge is designed to build strong reading habits while connecting families with local programs and events. For many families, it offers a simple way to keep kids engaged during the colder months — and a fun family outing to look forward to in March.
