If your house has copies of The Princess in Black, Vampirina Ballerina, or Itty-Bitty Kitty-Corn on the bookshelf, you may already be familiar with the work of LeUyen Pham. This spring, families in Roanoke will have the chance to see her original artwork up close at the Taubman Museum of Art.
The exhibit will be on display from February 5 through June 14, 2026, in the Bank of America/Dominion Resources Galleries. It highlights illustrations from across Pham’s career, including artwork connected to Bear Came Along, the Caldecott Honor–winning book that inspired the exhibition’s theme.
Pham has illustrated more than 140 children’s books. Her drawings are expressive and full of personality — whether she’s bringing animals to life or capturing the small, funny, and heartfelt moments between friends and family members. Many of the characters she’s illustrated have gone on to become popular series that kids ask to read again and again.
Born in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), Pham left Vietnam with her family during the final days of the war and grew up in Southern California. She initially studied political science at UCLA before shifting her focus to illustration at ArtCenter College of Design. After graduation, she worked briefly in animation with DreamWorks before fully dedicating her career to children’s books.
For families, this exhibit offers a simple but meaningful outing. Kids who love these stories can see how the artwork begins — from sketches to finished illustrations — and adults may enjoy learning more about the artist behind some of today’s most recognizable picture books.
There will also be an Opening Weekend Celebration on Saturday, February 7 from 10 am to 1 pm. The event is free, open to the public, and does not require registration. Families can stop by to enjoy art, music, cake, and books.
