As a mom, I know none of us wants to think about our child getting lost. But after learning more about the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office ID-A-KID Program, I also know it's one of those things that's worth taking 10 minutes to do and then hope you never need.
The program is completely free and gives parents a wallet-sized ID card with current information about their child that can be quickly shared with law enforcement if an emergency ever happens.
What is the ID-A-KID Program?
When you attend an event, deputies will create a personalized ID card for your child that includes:
- A current photo
- Height and weight
- Eye and hair color
- Emergency contact information
- Medical conditions and allergies
If a child is ever separated from their family or reported missing, having all of that information together can save valuable time. It also helps first responders know the right questions to ask parents about medical needs or special circumstances and makes it easier to coordinate with neighboring agencies if assistance is needed.
You Don't Need to Bring Paperwork
One of the best parts is how simple the process is.
There are no official documents required. Just bring your child and be ready to provide their date of birth, any medical conditions or allergies, and other identifying physical features. Deputies will take a current photograph during your visit, so your child does need to be present.

- Monday, June 29 ,10:30 am – 1:00 pm -- Green Ridge Recreation Center
- Tuesday, June 30, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm -- Vinton Library
- Thursday, July 2, 10:00 am –12:00 pm -- South County Library
- Monday, July 20, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm -- South County Library
- Wednesday, July 22, 5:00pm – 7:00 pm -- Cave Spring Baptist Church
- Thursday, July 23, 10:00 am – 12:30 pm -- Green Ridge Recreation Center / Hollins Express Library
The program is coordinated by Sgt. Alex Wertz with the Roanoke County Sheriff's Office.
