Summer doesn't have to be expensive to be memorable. If you're looking for a free way to get the kids out of the house and burning off some energy, PLAY Roanoke's Free Field Days are worth adding to your calendar.
This summer series brings active play and old fashioned field day fun to parks across the city, giving elementary and middle school students a chance to spend the day outdoors with friends while trying new games and enjoying a little friendly competition.
Field Days will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at four different Roanoke parks:
June 22: Eureka Park
June 29: Belmont Park
July 6: Preston Park
July 13: Highland Park
Kids can jump into classic activities like sack races, relay races, tug-of-war, jump rope contests, Capture the Flag, basketball challenges, and the Pass, Punt, and Kick Challenge. There will also be free-play stations and other team-building games throughout the day, so there's plenty to keep everyone moving.
D&G Wonderland will be on site with inflatables, and families can enjoy food, sweet treats, and additional activities while spending the day together.
The events are open to elementary and middle school-aged youth, and local youth development summer camps are encouraged to participate. Parents, grandparents, siblings, and other community members are invited to come out and cheer on the fun.
One of the best parts? It's all free.
