When the summer calendar starts filling up, it's easy to think you need a weekend getaway to make the most of the season. The truth is, one of Virginia's best family destinations is just over an hour from Roanoke.
Smith Mountain Lake State Park is close enough for a spontaneous day trip but offers enough to do that it feels like a mini vacation. Hit the Beach
If your kids have been asking for a beach day, you don't have to head to the coast.
Smith Mountain Lake State Park features a sandy swimming beach with a designated swim area that's perfect for cooling off on a hot summer day. Bring sand toys, beach chairs, towels, and a picnic lunch, and you're set for hours of fun.
The park also has picnic shelters, playgrounds, restrooms, grills, and plenty of shady spots to relax when you need a break from the sun.
Explore Beyond the Water
Once everyone has had their fill of swimming, there's plenty more to discover.
Several scenic trails wind through the woods and along the shoreline, making them a great place to look for birds, butterflies, turtles, deer, and other wildlife. Families can also rent kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, or boats to explore the lake from a different perspective.
If your kids enjoy a challenge, try geocaching while you're there. It's a fun way to add a little adventure to your hike, and older kids especially love searching for hidden caches throughout the park.
Turn Your Visit Into a Summer Science Adventure
One of our favorite things about Smith Mountain Lake State Park is the variety of family programs offered throughout the summer.
If you're looking for the perfect reason to make the drive this weekend, the park is celebrating its 43rd birthday with the Happy Bird-Day Expo on Saturday, July 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Families can enjoy bird-themed activities, live animal presentations, guided bird walks, crafts, games, and interactive exhibits at the Discovery Center. It's a fun way to learn more about the birds and wildlife that call Smith Mountain Lake home while spending a day outdoors together.
The fun doesn't stop there. Throughout the summer, park rangers host activities that help kids learn about the natural world through hands-on experiences, games, and demonstrations. If you're planning another visit, consider timing your trip around one of these upcoming programs:
- July 9 | 8 – 9 pm — Firefly Campfire
An hour of relaxing stories & catching fireflies. Learn some interesting facts about these glowing insects. This is a great way for the family to wind down after a busy day and, of course, there will be marshmallows to roast. - July 11 | 3:30 pm – 5pm — Discovery Center Exploration
Discover how the second largest lake in Virginia was created, or wander through our butterfly garden, learn about our ospreys, and explore at our "touch table". - July 14 | 12:30 - 1:30pm — Bee Kind To Bees
Find out how your favorite foods may disappear if the pollinator species disappear. Explore the life cycle of honeybees and discover their large impact on the environment and humans. Enter honeybee society, and get a sweet taste of the product of all their hard work. You even get to make your own beeswax candle to take home. - July 24 | 5 – 6 pm — Mystical Owls
Who-who's there? Come on over and explore the four resident owl species found in our area. Find out what they eat and all about the special adaptations that they have which allows them survive in this habitat. You'll also learn how to tell them apart by their distinctive calls. - July 26 | 8:15–9:15 pm — Batty Wagon
One of the park's most popular summer programs, this evening wagon ride gives families a chance to watch bats emerge while learning why they're so important to our environment.
These are just a handful of the activities offered throughout the summer. Ranger-led hikes, wildlife programs, crafts, and seasonal nature talks are scheduled regularly. Earn a Junior Ranger Badge
If your child loves completing challenges, don't miss the Junior Ranger program.
Pick up a free activity booklet, work through the challenges as you explore the park, and earn a Junior Ranger badge while learning about wildlife, conservation, and Virginia's state parks. It's a fun way to keep kids engaged while exploring the outdoors.
Make Time for the Discovery Center
Even if you don't visit during a scheduled program, the Discovery Center is worth adding to your plans.
Inside you'll find exhibits that introduce families to the plants and animals that call Smith Mountain Lake home. It's a great stop for curious kids and a nice way to cool off before heading back outside.
Pack for a Full Day
A little preparation goes a long way.
Bring sunscreen, bug spray, refillable water bottles, towels, water shoes, snacks, and a change of clothes for the ride home. If you're planning to spend the day at the beach, arriving earlier in the morning can help you beat some of the summer crowds.
